A restaurant with a loyal following has a duty to uphold: keep serving up the good stuff that keeps customers happy.
Connie Santos, co-owner and chef at Spice Rack Deli, does that, as evidenced by her second-straight win as best neighborhood restaurant in north central San Antonio. It also took a gold in best for the buck and a silver for best sandwich/sub shop. "When we get awards like this, it lets us know we are on the right path," says Santos, who opened her sandwich shop in the Medical Center area in 1999 and moved to Stone Oak in 2009.
Though Santos has streamlined the menu from the original 28 sandwiches, some of her longtime customers still come in ask for original offerings by number. And they make them.The favorite sandwich remains the San Antonio Chz-Steak, a local twist on the Philadelphia classic. Santos spent time in Philly, and applies what she learned about cheesesteaks there, then she kicks it up with the addition of roasted poblanos and red peppers and Pepper Jack cheese and her Hombre Sauce.
Santos enjoys playing with flavor combinations, such as in the new Spice Rack Fiesta Burger. The burger is topped with sautÈed green peppers, mushrooms onions and poblano chiles, then dressed with a honey-based ancho mayo sauce and served on a jalapeÒo cheese bun.
"We have a very eclectic menu," Santos says. A breakfast favorite is the Huevos Rancheros, and the meatloaf and mashed potatoes — made with cream and butter — sell out quickly on the Wednesday blue plate special.
"We pride ourselves on the fact that everything is made in the house," Santos says. "If you don't believe it, come in the back and watch my guys get frustrated at my recipes."
The Spice Rack Deli also caters.
